Also called: Mounjaro, Zepbound, LY3298176, LY-3298176, Tirz.

GLP-1 / GIP / glucagon agonists · Dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist · Evidence: Approved drug.

Tirzepatide is a weekly injection approved for type 2 diabetes, weight management and sleep apnea in defined groups. Mounjaro also has a US cardiovascular-risk indication for eligible adults. Large trials support its effects on glucose and weight. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are common; dehydration, gallbladder problems and pancreatitis need attention. Online microdosing and stacking have much weaker evidence.

  • Zepbound is approved for long-term weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition. (Drug label)
  • Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes from age 10, and Zepbound for moderate-to-severe sleep apnea in adults with obesity. (Drug label)
  • In head-to-head trials, it lowered blood sugar more than semaglutide 1 mg and led to more weight loss than obesity-dose semaglutide. (Studied in a trial)
  • In a large trial, fewer people with prediabetes went on to develop diabetes while on treatment. (Studied in a trial)
