How Somatropin works

Prescription human growth hormone, with no proven anti-aging benefit.

Also called: HGH, hGH, rhGH, recombinant human growth hormone, Genotropin, Humatrope, Norditropin, Omnitrope, Saizen, Zomacton, Serostim, Zorbtive, Nutropin AQ.

Growth hormone · Recombinant human growth hormone receptor agonist · Evidence: Approved drug.

It replaces GH directly, unlike peptides that ask the pituitary to release more. GH helps the body use fat and signals the liver and other tissues to make IGF-1, which supports growth. Too much can cause fluid buildup and make insulin work less well.

  • Growth hormone receptor: Triggers growth signals and changes how the body uses protein, fat and sugar.
  • IGF-1 pathway: Increases IGF-1 production in the liver and other tissues; supports bone and tissue growth.

Half-life: Genotropin: about 3 hours after an SC injection in adults with GHD; about 0.4 hours after IV dosing.
