Milligrams, mL and syringe markings.
Amount, volume and biological activity are different measurements. Use the exact product concentration to connect them.
Amount is not volume
1 mg = 1,000 mcg. A mass does not establish a volume without the exact product's verified final concentration.
The volume of diluent added can differ from the final volume. For a labeled product, use the label's final concentration and usable yield, including its discard rules.
Syringe markings and biological activity
A mark on a U-100 syringe represents 0.01 mL. That scale is specific to this syringe. Drug units and IU can describe biological activity; they are not a universal measure of volume or mass.
Product-specific preparation
For a lyophilised injectable vial, clean the stopper, add the specified diluent as directed, gently dissolve the powder using the product's instructions, and store it at the specified temperature. The diluent amount, final concentration and discard time belong to that exact formulation.
Oral, nasal, topical, sublingual and implant products do not become injectable through arithmetic. Ready-to-use solutions do not need added water. Use the exact product instructions and a pharmacist's advice.
Use only the diluent specified for that product. Bacteriostatic water does not sterilize a contaminated powder or remove endotoxin. A punctured multidose vial's discard period does not establish the stability of a different mixed product.
Use a new sterile needle and syringe for each injection. Put used sharps directly into a sharps container and follow local disposal rules. Never share pens or save leftovers from a single-dose vial.
