Side effects and when to stop.
Side effects depend on the compound and product. Severe symptoms need urgent care; missing safety data does not establish safety.
- Stomach upset is the most common GLP-1 side effect: nausea in 44% on Wegovy 2.4 mg versus 16% on placebo.
- Severe belly pain that won't ease, especially reaching the back: stop dosing and get urgent care.
- Swollen face, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing: call emergency services now.
- Medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 in you or your family, pregnancy, or trying to conceive rule out GLP-1 drugs.
- Use a new sterile needle and syringe every time, and never share pens.
Common, or stop now
Common, usually manageable
- Nausea, diarrhea, constipation Smaller meals and fluids may help; persistent or severe symptoms need review.
- Injection-site reactions Redness or swelling where you injected.
- Fatigue and headache Reported more often than on placebo.
Stop and get help
- Belly pain that won't ease Possible pancreatitis.
- Can't keep fluids down, very little urine Dehydration or kidney injury.
- Hot, spreading redness with fever At the injection site: seek urgent care now.
- Sudden vision loss Get urgent eye care the same day.
- Chest pain, fainting, racing heart at rest Call emergency services.
Who shouldn't, or should ask first
- Pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive Avoid GLP-1 drugs. Human safety for retatrutide is unknown.
- Under 18 For research peptides, safety and an effective dose are unknown.
- Eating disorder history Appetite loss and rapid weight loss can make it worse.
- Diabetes medicines Insulin or sulfonylureas with a GLP-1 raise the risk of low blood sugar.
- Planned surgery Tell the anesthesia team. Slowed stomach emptying can leave food in the stomach despite fasting.
Clean technique
- Clean hands Wash before you touch the vial.
- Swab the stopper, every time Cold doesn't sterilize it.
- New needle each time Remove each needle from multidose pens, and never share pens.
- Keep the evidence After a suspected reaction, seek care first. Keep the vial, lot details and packaging.
